Writing
Interactive Academy

Create your own 30 minute+ narrative game with live video workshop playthroughs, supportive peers, and direct feedback along the way -- culminating in an industry showcase.

Don't wait for a perfect time to create. If you want to write your own game, write your own game.

With workshops like this one, you don't have to do it alone.

You don't need a workshop to become a writer, professional or otherwise -- but the community, guidance, and discipline that a good class can provide is invaluable for many. I created this class because -I- myself benefitted from MFA-style courses in other mediums, and I broke into games by producing exactly the kinds of interactive narratives I've now helped dozens produce since 2022.

To apply, use the waiting list form on this page where you'll also see details about the next class. Many courses don't show their fees before application, but mine is the same as theirs and I want to be transparent. This should be as much a creative investment in yourself as it is a financial one, and you should only go ahead if you're willing to challenge and dedicate yourself to the process. In appreciation of your own investment, I offer more live sessions (10 weeks instead of 6-8), tighter class sizes (~9-12 instead of 50), and more direct feedback with a one-to-one channel.

Below, you'll find more information including testimonials and videos from former students. If you decide to apply and if you are accepted to the course, you'll be able to start right away according to your own availability, working on a number of exercises in advance of your group sessions. Whatever you decide -- good luck!

“It taught me to write with the player in mind — they're an active participant, not a passive observer”

Tori-Lynne Davis Rockstar Games

“Greg's guidance & the support of fellow students make this an invaluable experience for anyone interested in writing for interactive mediums.”

Nathan Vokal Call of Duty: Modern Warfare · Infinity Ward

Who it's for

  • Both aspiring & professional writers I accept both aspiring and already-professional writers because all of us should have the ambition and courage to create our -own- work. For those wanting to get into games, writing an actual game is one of the best exercises possible and one surprisingly few commit towards -- to do the actual thing they love without asking for permission.
  • Storytellers from other mediums Following on from my PhD research on exactly the same subject, interactive writing has far more in common with other storytelling methods than you might think -- and part of the course focuses upon drawing these parallels to allow all those other skills you already have to become relevant.
  • Game Developers from other disciplines Learn the logic of game writing, bringing all those skills you have from other disciplines to bear in a way that will strengthen your understanding of this kind of work and your independence as a result.
  • No tools or specialist knowledge required No programming required -- we use Inkle's Ink, a writing format that doesn't require a specialist tool. It has a good natural flow, it's easily editable in many tools, and can be easily integrated into a variety of engines including Unity, Unreal, Godot, and more down the line.

Craft over careers

“There's no substitute for other people reading & critiquing your work. Doing so in the safe & encouraging space that Greg provides has been genuinely career-changing.”

Kate Gray Moonstone Island · Winding Worlds

The workshop is about taking your writing seriously and exploring the philosophy of good game narrative — maintaining focus upon one project rather than dividing your focus across small fragments. No course can or should promise a likelihood of career advancement, and although I'm still happy to support with advice on related matters, that's not why we're here. The skills practiced will still be highly valuable in other contexts — not just your actual writing, but ability to work with feedback, peer interaction, scope, and the demands of players. But the result is something we can actually promise each other if we commit, regardless of external forces. The whole reason people want to break into the industry in the first place: a game you've written, with the skills and passion to keep writing.

Course Structure

Preparation & tools

Before the group meetings begin, you'll work on core narrative skills and how to bring even non-interactive knowledge to bear in crafting great games. You'll build two concepts for your project and choose the best by the time we start.

  1. Narrative design foundations
  2. Worldbuilding and lore
  3. Creating compelling characters
  4. Game dialogue and choices
  5. Branching and scope

“This is the sort of structure that interactive narrative is crying out for. Access to honest, gentle, professional feedback in a medium where it can be hard to find is a blessing.”

Thomas Davies Whispers in the West

“More personal and helpful than most of my college level workshops… I'm now planning to turn that into my MFA thesis project”

Write & share

Before and between sessions, you'll be writing and editing your game -- working in response to feedback from sessions and in conversations directly in the one-to-one channel you'll have with me. You'll have three showcase presentations prior to our industry visit where the class will play your work.

Play & discuss

Like a group Let's Play, the presenter plays through their game and at the moment of narrative choice, other students vote on what they want to happen. You'll see live what kinds of choices excite and divide people, and get an in-depth discussion from others on your project's progress.

Learn through doing

By giving feedback on the work of others, you grow in your ability to assess and understand -your own- writing. Through the various discussions that arise, I use these to raise bigger points about narrative and interactive writing organically as we go along -- matching it to actual work produced along the way.

“That part of my imposter syndrome is gone, and that is entirely down to Greg, the course, and the culture he creates”

Alastair Stuart Writer · Doctor Who TTRPG

Polish & showcase

You'll work with me to polish your writing from the course for a demo with a senior industry guest at our industry showcase. You'll see the improved work of your classmates as our guest plays them all live and discusses with each student. Afterwards, I will assess if your work has sufficiently improved since your joining the course -- if so, you'll get your graduate status with a LinkedIn-integrated certificate. Well done in advance!

“Without this course, it wouldn't have turned out as good as it did. It's a piece of art that I'm really proud of”
