Interactive Narrative Workshops involve intense writing and production over eleven weeks with live class playthroughs.
The group collectively plays and gives feedback on three work-in-progress games in a Zoom session each week, with the writer giving a live performance of the text.
Direct one-to-one contact time and teacher mentoring outside of class, with small group class sizes (9-15 people) to ensure everyone's work gets attention. This one-to-one skills development and planning work begins right after you are accepted to the course - meaning the earlier you apply, the more you benefit!
- Professional Game Writer? Push beyond your comfort zone. Discover new narrative techniques to create your own material. We have a strong alumni community of already-pro writers who have flourished breaking free from corporate edicts.
- Write for other mediums? Don't fear branching narratives – embrace them as new opportunities with far more in common with your prior work than you might think.
Are you an aspiring writer looking to join the games industry? Many believe they need advanced programming skills, a large budget, or a full development team to create games; that without 3D graphics or complex mechanics, your story isn't a "real" game.
This is not true, and we can help you. For many, this next concept is difficult to accept, but do you want to just dream your dream, or make it reality? Do you want to actually put the work in?
If you want to be a game writer, write a game.
I am a doctor of literature with a PhD. I have written for award-winning multi-million-selling projects across multiple mediums with my own TV show on the way. Yet I still spend a portion of my time teaching. You might wonder: Why?
Why do I want to teach most of it myself and help people directly? Well: It’s not only a privilege to help people develop and to get to play their stories before the rest of the world; the process of analytical feedback and discussion we all carry out during the workshops leads to all of us, even myself, honing our understanding of narrative and our ability to develop our own skills.
For me, learning about writing is a core part of why I am in this profession, and I hope to inspire the same values of mutual support, curiosity, and self-challenge.
The course is selective but we also accept aspiring writers, which may seem like a contradiction to many if you do not understand the way we are approaching things: the point is to learn. We do not need people who feel they have nothing left to learn, because it would not be true. We are looking for people who have the potential to develop the same values that drive everyone else’s success in these core areas: a lifelong pursuit of excellence and passion in storytelling.
